mAT Automatic Antenna Tuners

mAT-30 Tuner for Yaesu radios

The mAT-30 is an automatic tuner for the frequency range from 1.8 to 54 MHz. The tuner is compatible with a variety of Yaesu radios. Thus it can be operated on all Yaesu transceivers which can use the Yaesu tuners FC-30, FC-40 or FC-50. These are among other models: FT-100, FT-857D, FT-897D, FT-450D, FT-891, FT-950, FT-991(A). A suitable control cable for the CAT output of the radio is included. This cable is also used for the power supply.

The mAT-125E Tuner stores once found tuning settings per frequency in a memory. There are 16000 memory locations available for this purpose. If a known frequency is used again, the setting is read from the memory and the tuning process is completed in less than 0.2 seconds. If a new frequency is used or if a new frequency is to be tuned (and stored), the process takes max. 5 seconds. During the tuning process, the transmitter is offered a SWR of max. 2:1 to protect the output stage of the radio.

Operation is via the "Tune" button on the radio. This simplifies the tuning process by automatically switching to low power and CW mode, as well as switching back to the previously used transmission power and mode. The minimum tune power is 1 W, a maximum of 120 W PEP may be used, with RTTY and other continuous wave modes about 30 W max. The tuner tunes antennas in an impedance range from approx. 5 to 1500 Ohm, which is much more than the usual built-in tuners can handle.

mAT-125E Tuner for QRP and portable ops

The mAT-125E tuner is a compact and lightweight antenna tuner with built-in LiIon batteries. This makes it perfect for portable use, for example during a field day or SOTA activation on a hike. Due to the universal tuning, this tuner can be used with radios of all manufacturers, the only condition is that the transmission power can be reduced to 1 to 20 W. In the fully automatic mode the tuner starts tuning as soon as RF power is present, in the semi-automatic mode tuning only takes place after pressing the tune button.

5 seconds. During the tuning process it can happen with the mAT-125E that the transceiver 'sees' a SWR higher than 2:1 for a short time. Some radios with extremely sensitive protection circuits already react to this and switch off the transmitter, although the tuning process could not yet be completed entirely. For these radios the manufacturer recommends a different model, for example the mAT-30 Tuner.

The operation is done via the tune button on the tuner after the transmitter has been manually switched to low power (1 to 20 W) and FM, RTTY or CW to transmit a continuous carrier. The mAT-125E can also be tuned manually in order to tune outside the transmission range (e.g. to listen to shortwave radio). In order to save power, this tuner is equipped with bi-stable latch relays, which maintain their switching state even after switching off the power supply. After 5 seconds the mAT-125E goes into a sleep state in which it only needs a few µA, the LEDs are switched off too. With a new pressing of the Tune-button the tuner wakes up again. This sleep mode can also be disabled. The front key can also be used to switch the tuner to bypass mode if the antenna does not require any tuning on a certain band. The coax output (PL) tunes antennas in an impedance range of approx. 5 to 1500 Ohm, which is much more than the usual built-in tuners can handle.

The power supply is provided by two built-in 18650 LiIon batteries with a capacity of approx. 2500 mAh. This allows for days of operation even for extended holidays. A plug-in charger is included in the scope of delivery.

mAT-40 Outdoor-Tuner for end-fed wires

The mAT-40 tuner has a weatherproof metal housing and is intended for permanent outdoor use. It tunes end-fed wire antennas or wire loops. A high-voltage screw terminal is provided on top of the tuner for this purpose. The connection to the radio is made via a PL coax socket on the bottom of the tuner. The power supply and control signal is provided by a waterproof screw connection, also on the bottom. A 10m long cable is included. This cable must be adapted to the respective transceiver with an optionally available interface cable. Interface cables for Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu are available. For other radios, the manufacturer offers a universal cable for own adaptation.

The following transceivers are supported:

  • with mAT-40-M cable: All Icom with 4-pin tuner socket, all devices that support AH-3 or AH-4, with modification also the IC-M710 can be used.
  • with mAT-40-K cable: All Kenwood with 6-pin tuner socket, all devices that support the AT-250 or AT-300.
  • with mAT-40-Y cable: All Yaesu with 8-pin MiniDIN CAT socket supporting the FC-30, FC-40 or FC-50.

The tuner tunes antenna wires or rods from a length of approx. 2.5m on, whereby the efficiency is strongly limited with such short antennas. The suggested antenna length is 12m, other lengths are also possible. In some cases it may be necessary to connect a counterpoise wire to the tuner. A screw terminal on the underside is used for this purpose. Here, for example, the body of a vehicle or an electric counterpoise on a sailing ship can be connected. Stainless steel brackets are included for mounting. They are used for mounting on a mast or on the wall. M6 U-bolts from 25 to 100mm width can be used for mast mounting (not included). The tuner is weatherproof.

Operation is via the "Tune" button on the radio. This simplifies the tuning process by automatically switching to low power and CW, as well as switching back to the previously used transmission line and mode. The maximum transmission power may be 120W PEP, with RTTY and other continuous wave modes about max. 30W. The tuner tunes antennas in an impedance range from approx. 5 to 1500 Ohm.

mAT-10 QRP Tuner with battery

20150508_135054The mAT-10 tuner is a very compact tuner for QRP devices such as the FT-817/818. The maximum permissible transmission power is 30 W SSB PEP. The power supply is provided by two built-in LiIon batteries (type 10440), which makes the tuner a good companion for portable operations with the FT-817 or FT-818. A charger is included. The control is done via a supplied cable (8-pin MiniDIN) which is connected to the ACC connector of the FT-817/818.

Operation is via a button on the tuner. By the direct coupling between tuner and transceiver the so-called "One Touch Tune" becomes possible - the tuner switches the operating mode to CW and reduces the power, tunes and then automatically switches back to the previously set operating mode and transmission power. This makes the tuning process very comfortable. As with all mAT tuners, a tuning once found is stored in one of 16000 memories, depending on the frequency. If returning to the same frequency later, the data is read from the memory, the tuning process takes place in approx. 0.2 seconds. Due to the use of bi-stable latch relays, which keep their state without power, the power consumption is extremely low. The tuner can be switched to a bypass mode if the antenna does not require tuning on a certain band. The connectors are two BNC sockets.
